Curcumin supplements are cheaper than you think, study finds
The supplements listed in the latest Australian Product Safety Authority report show curcumin has a “low level of toxicity and is a widely used supplement that is safe and effective for treating inflammation”.
It’s also “low in fat and cholesterol”, according to the Australian Product Quality Authority, which is recommending its use.
Dr Jussi Kallio, an expert in medical supplements at the University of Sydney, said the results showed the curcumins were “a good supplement for the average person”.

However, Dr Kesto said the research did not support the drug being a “gateway drug” that can cause anxiety.
Dr Kalli said it was possible curcumeins were a safe supplement for people with depression.
“If people are able to make a positive response to curcucins, it might be possible to have a positive result from taking curcues and that might be helpful in helping to reduce anxiety,” he said.
The Australian Product Standards Authority said in an emailed statement it had no further information about curcue use.
The ABC contacted the manufacturer of the product.
“I can’t comment on product safety, but do not recommend that people consume curcumes,” the statement read.
The product can be bought online for $50 and can be ordered via online stores like Amazon.com, but the Aussie Product Standards authority said that it did not recommend it as a recommended supplement.
“In order to recommend a product for use, it has to be evaluated by the Australian Products Standards Authority and a recommendation is made on the basis of its safety and effectiveness,” Dr Jossi Kalli, an Australian Product Research Institute expert, told the ABC.
“It would be inappropriate for a consumer to take curcumen in any form.”
Dr Kalla said the study also found there was no evidence that curcurumin could cause psychosis.
He said the AOQA was “looking at the data from these supplements to see if there’s any link”.
Dr Kallo said the use of curcuces had increased over the last few years and suggested people should ask their GP or dietitian if they wanted to take a curcunein supplement.
Dr Lidia Dzodan, an associate professor at the Australian School of Public Health at the Murdoch University in Sydney, told News.au that the new study had shown curcuseins were safe.
“What we found was that curcuines actually work for the body,” she said.
Dr Dzodans study, published in the journal Annals of Neurology, looked at the effects of curcurumeins on the central nervous system.
It found they were able to reduce inflammation, and there was a decrease in depression.
The researchers said they hoped the findings would lead to more research into curcureins.
