How omega 3 supplements can help with weight loss and mental health
- June 22, 2021
A new supplement that can help prevent mental health problems, depression and even depression-related dementia has been discovered by scientists in the US.
A team from Yale University’s Department of Psychiatry has found that curcumin, the main ingredient in turmeric, can help treat symptoms of anxiety and depression.
The researchers said their study found that turmeric extracts were effective in treating depression and anxiety-related symptoms, such as anxiety and anger, in people with bipolar disorder.
“The findings are intriguing because of their potential impact on psychiatric and psychiatric-related disorders,” the authors wrote in the journal Science.
“We hypothesised that turmerol might have an effect on depression and stress in bipolar disorder, because of its antidepressant properties, and the fact that the turmeric extract had a calming effect on participants’ anxiety and increased feelings of well-being, and reduced anxiety-like behavior.”
The researchers conducted the research in a pilot study with a small group of volunteers.
They found that participants were more likely to respond to the turmerols treatment if they were already taking antidepressant medication, and were more sensitive to its effects.
“Our data show that curcumins curcuma longa has antidepressant and mood-modifying properties, but it has not been clinically tested,” said lead author Dr James McWilliams.
“Its mechanisms of action are not known.
However, turmeric has a number of pharmacological properties that could potentially interact with antidepressant and anti-depressant medications.”
Professor Timothy R. McQuaid, of the University of Toronto’s Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, who was not involved in the study, said the finding was exciting.
“It’s a very interesting molecule,” he said.
“These findings are very exciting because turmeric is very popular in Asian countries and it is a traditional medicine in Asian societies.”
This finding should encourage other researchers to conduct studies to investigate its therapeutic potential in other populations.
“Researchers are studying the effects of turmeric on mental health in more detail, including the ability of the compound to block certain chemical messengers, such anandamide, which has been linked to depression and mental disorders.
They are also examining the effect of turmerolic extracts on brain chemistry, and whether the compound is able to improve memory and cognition in patients with bipolar.
The turmeric supplements were discovered by Dr McWilliams and colleagues after testing the compounds in mice.
They are being tested in people, as well as in the lab.”
The results from this pilot study are very encouraging.””
I would like to find out if it can work for people.
The results from this pilot study are very encouraging.”
But we are looking at it as an experimental drug, and it’s important to have a long term study to see if turmeric can actually work.
