How to get the best calcium supplement on the market

In a statement released Thursday, the agency said it has not updated its guidelines since 2011.
The agency’s recommendation is based on a “complex analysis” of factors that include whether the supplement is free of added sugars, added flavors, and preservatives.
The FDA said it is “not a recommendation” that health care workers supplement with the right amount of calcium because it’s not “specifically established.”
“If you’re looking to get calcium supplements for your child, and you know you have the right levels of calcium in your body, then you should supplement with calcium supplements,” Dr. John Stauffer, a professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and director of the Center for Calcium and Vitamin D at Children’s Hospital Boston, said in a statement.
“There is no clear scientific basis to recommend higher levels of the mineral, and there’s no evidence that it has any effect on the risk of disease,” he said.
Stauffer noted that the guidelines don’t specifically mention supplements containing sodium, which is commonly used in calcium supplements.
The FDA also said it does not consider supplements containing added sugars or other ingredients to be “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) unless they are proven safe and effective.
Struggling with CalciumStauff said many health care providers do not have a full understanding of how the calcium in a calcium supplement works and that some may take the supplement as a “fancy treat” that is a “flavor of the month” when the child is not on calcium supplements or the other ingredients.
“This is an issue that’s a lot more prevalent for the older and the frail,” Stauff added.
“Many people who are on supplements may not understand that calcium is important for their bone health.”
Staupper also noted that calcium supplements are generally safe to take by older adults who have low levels of vitamin D or who are taking a vitamin D supplement to boost their vitamin D levels.
“It is important to remember that there are a lot of different factors that can affect the level of calcium that people have in their bodies, and those are the things that we should be taking into account when making recommendations,” he added.
The AMA and other groups support higher calcium levelsThe AMA, which represents more than 4 million health care professionals, supports higher calcium intake in older adults, Staupper said.
“A person should aim to get their recommended daily calcium intake from foods that are low in added sugars,” AMA President Richard J. Boudreaux said in the statement.
“Calcium supplements are often not fortified with any form of calcium.
In general, people should aim for a daily calcium content of at least 25 mg of calcium per kilogram of body weight.”

Calcium can also be converted to other minerals, which contribute to overall health, which may contribute to bone health.
“The recommended daily intake of calcium for adults is based upon the amount that is necessary for the body to maintain healthy levels of bone density,” Boudresaux said.
