Why is probiotic supplements bad for men
Experts in the field of probiotic supplementation are divided over whether the benefits outweigh the risks.
The question is being asked because some experts believe the benefits of consuming probiotics can outweigh the negative side effects, and some argue that the risk outweighs the benefits.
Probiotics are foods that have been traditionally used to treat conditions such as Crohn’s disease, and a recent survey of UK patients found that half of the people with Crohnís disease have taken a probiotic supplement.
In the latest UK survey, published last month, researchers found that about half of all patients taking a probiotics supplement reported being treated for Crohnʼs disease at least once a week.
But researchers warn that a lack of clear data about the efficacy and safety of probiotics in treating Crohn′s disease may hamper the development of new treatments.
In fact, research has suggested that the benefits could be exaggerated by the adverse effects of the supplement, including a rise in the risk of certain types of infections, including the common cold.
Dr David Wright, professor of nutritional science and epidemiology at the University of Edinburgh, said the benefits and risks of probotics could be mitigated if more data were available.
He said the survey data highlighted the need for more research into the safety of the supplements, which are currently unregulated.
Dr Wright said the UK government should consider establishing a regulator to oversee probiotics and ensure that probiotics are sold in an appropriately regulated market.
Probes and antibioticsThe latest UK study looked at how many people taking a supplement received antibiotics or probiotics, and how much of that was the result of taking them.
The results showed that the most common treatment for Crohns disease was antibiotics, followed by probiotics.
But only 17% of those taking probiotics had received at least one antibiotic, compared with 50% of people taking antibiotics and 70% of the general population.
And more than half of those who took probiotics reported that they had used the supplement in the previous week, compared to 40% of all those taking antibiotics.
In contrast, less than half (48%) of those taken antibiotics reported using the supplement for the past 12 months.
Dr Adam Grant, professor in the department of medicine at the National University of Singapore, said there could be a range of reasons for people not taking probiotic drugs.
He suggested that many people might take them because they had been prescribed them by doctors for other conditions.
He added that people may not realise that their antibiotics or dietary supplements may be harmful.
“Some people may think they are taking antibiotics, but actually they are actually doing something else,” he said.
“They are not necessarily getting the right nutrients from the supplements.”
But Dr Grant added that it could be that some people taking probionic supplements might not be taking them to treat Crohn disease because they did not need them.
He pointed out that people with the condition who had been told they needed probiotics could also take them for other reasons, such as being overweight or taking certain medications.
“There is also the issue that probiotic pills are often prescribed for the condition they are treating and the pill is not necessarily the best way to go for that,” he explained.
Dr Grant said the most important thing people could do to ensure they are not taking too many antibiotics was to check with their doctor about their health, diet and supplements.
“This can include looking at the ingredients of any supplement you are taking and how they are formulated,” he added.
Dr Gregory Purdon, professor and chair of dietetics at University College London, said that the current information was very confusing.
“People often assume that the supplement is taking them a certain amount of antibiotics, which is actually incorrect,” he told RTE.
“It’s often assumed that it’s just an antibiotic, but in reality it’s a probiotoxin.”
So if you take it, it’s taken in the same way as antibiotics.
“If you don’t take it at all, it could cause problems, and in fact it could.
So it’s important to be clear about that.”
You don’t need to take it as often, it may be taken more frequently.
But there is also an important role for people to be aware of this and to look for alternative sources of nutrients.”‘
Dangers of mis-estimation’The survey also found that people who had taken probiotics were more likely to be overweight and to have a history of heart disease.
The researchers said that although people taking the supplements were likely to have an effective treatment for their condition, they could also be at increased risk of other side effects.
For instance, people taking them who are obese or have diabetes could be at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Dr Purdons said the results of the survey, which were published in the medical journal The Lancet, were not enough to establish whether the supplements might actually be effective for treating Crohny disease.
He explained that the survey looked at a range a variety of conditions,
