The FDA has approved the first of several omega 3-enriched dietary supplements to be sold to consumers this fall, according to the American College of Cardiology.
The new omega 3 products, which are also called omega 3 capsules, have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States.
While most supplements in the supplement category have been marketed under the brand names Xeno-Caps and Xoceo-Camps, this is the first time they have been sold under the name omega 3s.
The FDA approved the products under the brands name, Xeno-Stem, Xoceos, and Xosin, and the product packaging is in Japanese.
“This is an important milestone in the development of new omega-3 supplements, and it will provide more access to the most important source of the omega 3, and one of the most abundant, in the U.S.,” said Dr. James Breslow, director of the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
According to the FDA, omega 3 supplementation is an essential component of a healthy diet.
Its role in preventing and treating some chronic diseases is well-established.
Currently, there is no FDA-approved treatment for heart disease, and patients are often prescribed anti-inflammatory medications or anti-fibromyalgia medications, according the FDA.
To date, more than 1 million people in the US have been prescribed omega 3.
It is estimated that about two-thirds of the world’s population consumes omega 3 in supplement form.
In a study published in the journal Nature Medicine, researchers analyzed the vitamin-enriching effects of omega 3 oil on a variety of human cells, including mice, rats, and fish.
Their research also revealed that omega 3 was able to prevent the formation of cholesterol in the blood.
“We now know that omega-6 and omega-7 fatty acids are essential for the function of cell membranes, and that omega 6 is essential for energy production, so omega 3 may be able to help people to reduce cholesterol and triglycerides in the body,” Dr. Bresold said.
Scientists also noted that omega supplementation can reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and certain cancers.
The new products are available to buy through the US Food and Pharmaceutical Administration website and online at Amazon.com, Amazon.co.uk, and other retailers.
