A Canadian doctor says probiotics could help prevent a rare but potentially deadly condition called joint pain.

Dr. Ravi Gopalan says a study of 100 people in the U.K. found that those who took a probiotic supplement to treat joint pain experienced a decrease in the number of new joint infections in their lifetime.

Gopalan is the author of the study, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study also found that the more probiotic a person consumed, the less likely they were to develop the condition.

“If you have a person with a normal diet, if they are taking a probiotics supplement, the more they eat, the fewer bacteria they get in their intestines, the better they are at keeping bacteria out of their gut,” said Gopan.

Dr Adam Grant, professor in the department of medicine at the National University of Singapore, said there could be a range of reasons for people not taking probiotic drugs.

He suggested that many people might take them because they had been prescribed them by doctors for other conditions.

He added that people may not realise that their antibiotics or dietary supplements may be harmful.

“Some people may think they are taking antibiotics, but actually they are actually doing something else,” he said.

“They are not necessarily getting the right nutrients from the supplements.”

But Dr Grant added that it could be that some people taking probionic supplements might not be taking them to treat Crohn disease because they did not need them.

He pointed out that people with the condition who had been told they needed probiotics could also take them for other reasons, such as being overweight or taking certain medications.

“There is also the issue that probiotic pills are often prescribed for the condition they are treating and the pill is not necessarily the best way to go for that,” he explained.

Dr Grant said the most important thing people could do to ensure they are not taking too many antibiotics was to check with their doctor about their health, diet and supplements.

“This can include looking at the ingredients of any supplement you are taking and how they are formulated,” he added.

Dr Gregory Purdon, professor and chair of dietetics at University College London, said that the current information was very confusing.

“People often assume that the supplement is taking them a certain amount of antibiotics, which is actually incorrect,” he told RTE.

“It’s often assumed that it’s just an antibiotic, but in reality it’s a probiotoxin.”

So if you take it, it’s taken in the same way as antibiotics.

“If you don’t take it at all, it could cause problems, and in fact it could.

So it’s important to be clear about that.”
